Travel & Tourism Industry

Travel and Trading Industry

Travel and tourism industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth in India, and is among the fastest growing sectors. India ranks 11th in the Asia Pacific region and 65th globally out of 140 economies ranked on travel and tourism Competitiveness Index as per the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, 2013. The contribution of the sector to the country’s GDP has been estimated to be about 5.4% in 2013, which is expected to grow at an average rate of 6.4% annually between 2014 and 2024. The industry is estimated to have supported about 25 million direct and 40 million total employment in 2012, and this is forecasted to increase at a growth rate of 2.1% by 2023.

The travel and tourism sector consists of very widely varying categories of people, from travel agents to front office staff, from housekeeping to top management employees, etc. Though the sector has seen immense growth, adequate training and skill development infrastructure and hence availability of trained manpower has not kept pace with growth. The hospitality sector alone witnessed a shortfall of 0.5 million employees during 2011-2012 which is expected to rise to 0.8 million by 2017. The sector being considerably fragmented, skilled staff consists of only about 21% of the total workforce of the industry (KPMG 2013 estimates). Thus, developing and maintaining a competent, well managed and well motivated human resources workforce in order to provide high quality services and products, is often a challenge for organizations and managers. Other challenges for employees include generally low wages, frequent reliance on informal recruitment methods, unsocial hours and shift patterns, inadequate or non-existent career structures, dependence on seasonal employment, etc.
